It's a massive PITA to setup equipment but once it's setup it's really helpful.

Some of the things it does do really well: ingredient database and offline equipment profile. If I didn't have beersmith, I could probably scratch out strike water amount and temp on a scratchpad. Honestly, I go into beersmith with a pretty good idea of the grain bill composition and hop mix, and then I'm just fiddling with exact quantities to get in the ballpark of mash temp, ABV, SRM, and FG for my target. For example, it won't throw a warning if you sub a crystal malt for a biscuit malt (a pretty dire flaw in some styles), but the color will be the same. One of the things to keep in mind, beersmith doesn't help you write recipes, per se, it helps you check things that one might already know to look for. Criticism is fine, but it has to be constructive or it's just whining.)

But it bothers me when people who are not gui designers say something's "bad" without being able to point at concrete examples of why it's bad or provide examples of how to make it better. There's an easy way to prove otherwise, and that's to mockup a design you feel is better and do an A/B comparison.

BEERSMITH FREE SOFTWARE
IMHO, If the information is laid out logically (which IMHO Beersmith is), and it follows platform paradigms (which Beersmith does there are no silly ctrl+click or shift+click combos like in MacOS), and it's not glaringly ugly (I once worked on a piece of software where the designers thought a green and purple color scheme would be a good idea I changed that back to a standard gray pretty quick) then it's not a bad UI. UI design is hard, and it's a constant trade-off between showing the important information and hiding that information to prevent clutter. But then I'm an engineer, so maybe that's why. So do some mockups? Aside from a few toolbar rearrangements, I'm happy with Beersmith's layout. And the real irony is that calibre does in fact have a bookshelf view and flip-cover view and whatever else, but thankfully that's not the main view or the default.Īs long as the app follows platform conventions (looking at you, Apple, with your iTunes on Windows that uses MacOS interaction patterns that are foreign concepts to Windows users) and doesn't require weird or unintuitive interaction patterns, and as long as the view presents the data in the most logical way for that data, I don't care if the app is "ugly". For example, one of the two main complaints about ebook management software calibre is that it's "not pretty", by which people mean, "It's not presented as a faux bookshelf with book covers on the shelf." Instead it's presented as a table of data, because that's exactly how you'd expose the information from a database, which it ultimately is. It's a common complaint about lots of applications, and it's ridiculous. If you try to simplify the interface, you will inevitably either get rid of vital interactivity or create more convoluted and complex navigation patterns to do the same thing you used to be able to do in 1-2 clicks. People just don't like that kind of interface anymore, which is frustrating because it's the perfect interface for a complex piece of software like Beersmith. No, it does not work well with a touch interface (caveat: I don't use the mobile app, but I would assume that this does work well with touch, else it would be worthless). Yes, it's a forms-based application with a bunch of boxes and buttons with very high information density.

And what they mean by that is that it's not the familiar smooth, information-sparse web-based interface everybody's gotten used to since Web 2.0 took off. Yeah, everybody rags on Beersmith for having a "bad" UI, but what they really mean by that is "not pretty" (I won't call it ugly!).
